Yankees sign INF Ryan, make pitch to Kuroda

The New York Yankees re-signed infielder Brendan Ryan to a two-year contract through the 2015 season with a mutual option for 2016, the team announced Monday.

Ryan, 31, joined the Yankees in September in a deal for a player to be named with the Seattle Mariners. The 31-year-old started the Yankees' final 17 games at shortstop and batted .220 with one home run.

In 87 games with the Mariners last season, Ryan hit .192 with three home runs and 21 RBIs.

Ryan began his major league career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2007. In 783 career games, he has a .237 batting average with 19 home runs and 187 RBIs.

The Yankees continued to work on trying to sign starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda to a contract extension, offering him a one-year deal worth $15 million to $16 million, according to ESPN.

The 38-year-old right-hander earlier rejected a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Yankees. He might be considering a return to his native Japan.

Kuroda finished last season with a 11-13 record and a 3.31 ERA.

In other moves Monday, the Yankees non-tendered three players: right-hander Matt Daley and infielders Jayson Nix and David Adams.

Nix, 31, saw extensive action last season as a fill-in for injured third baseman Alex Rodriguez and shortstop Derek Jeter. He hit .236 with a .308 on-base percentage, a .311 slugging percentage, three homers and 24 RBIs in 87 games.

Adams, 26, hit .193 with a .252 on-base percentage, a .286 slugging percentage, two homers and 13 RBIs in 43 games for New York this year.

Daley, 31, made seven relief appearances for the Yankees in 2013, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in six innings.
